Pecan Nuts
Pecans are the product of the Hickory tree, mostly grown in the USA. Not a true nut, the richly flavoured pecans grow in clusters of between 3 and 100, with harvests from one tree sometimes reaching 230kg a year. Pecans can be eaten raw or used in cooking. To make shelling easier they can be soaked in off-the-boil water for 10 minutes.
Pecans are a source of manganese, copper and thiamine, and contain cholesterol-lowering plant sterols.
