Hazelnuts are true nuts, falling out of the husk when ripe. The largest producer of hazelnuts is Turkey, though it is grown widely in the northern hemisphere, in Europe and USA. Evidence of hazelnut production has been found in Scotland dating to 7000BC. Nowadays, modern machinery is used to harvest the nuts from the ground.
